Commission on Social Development Side Events

The fifty-seventh session of the Commission for Social Development (CSocD57) took place from 11 to 21 February 2019, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The Commission is the advisory body responsible for the social development pillar of global development. The umbrella theme for this year was, “Addressing Inequalities and Challenges to Social Inclusion Through Fiscal, Wage and Social Protection Policies”

The Brahma Kumaris delegation of 4 attended a number of side events and few of the high-level events. Please see below a summary of what took place.

1:15–2:30 pmSide Event: Homelessness: A Prominent Sign of Social Inequalities, organized by the Permanent Mission of Ireland to the UN with representatives from the NGO Working Group to End Homelessness and the Institute for Global Homelessness. View list of speakers here: Speakers
Ηomelessness as a direct consequence of social inequalities and inefficient governmental policies through the experiences of advocates, researchers, policy makers and people living on the streets was examined at this event. The importance of addressing the structural causes of homelessness in order to achieve the 2030 Agenda of ensuring adequate housing for all was stressed by passionate speakers.
