International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD)
On Friday, December 2, the United Nations Head Quarters was buzzing with people with different forms of disabilities as they came together to observe the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The various events organized high-lighted the importance of providing decent living for disabled persons in all areas of their life, such as safe and accessible cities, education, and healthcare. During the high level panel held in the morning, the Secretary General of the UN, said “our duty now is to turn commitments (that were adopted during Habitat III) into action. Let us work together for the full and equal participation for persons with disabilities in an inclusive and sustainable world that embraces humanity.” You are welcome to watch the full event here
Another inspiring event was held in the evening, Accessible Cities for All, where mayors of various cities shared their vision of making their city safe and accessible for persons with disabilities. In the message from New York City Mayor, Mr. DiBlasio, he stated, “every person deserves a quality education, accessible and dependable transportation. Access to affordable housing and the opportunity to join the workforce. We reaffirm our commitment to ensuring every person can access the tools they need to love a happy and productive life.”
We were entertained with heartwarming performances by persons with disabilities:

A few organizations and companies were recognized for the role they play in offering opportunities – employment and education – to persons with disabilities. For example, SENAC, Sao Paulo, Brazil and Catepillar Inc., Brazil.
The ability to recognize and accept that each human being has a right to be here, that each one is special even if they may ‘look, walk, speak, or move’ in a way that is different from mine, is a gift that we are all born with. Use this gift fills our attitude with respect and appreciation for those around us, for life in general, and for ourselves.
