The Global Movement for The Culture of Peace
“The Culture of Peace: A Credible Pathway to Sustaining Peace.” Wednesday, September 5, 2018
The General Assembly Hall of the UNHQ in New York was the chosen place where member states, civil society and the private sector convened to share their expressions of peace and how we can all build a culture of peace. The 72nd. President of the GA, Mr. Miroslav Lajcak, requested each one present to ask themselves what does peace mean to them. The Culture of Peace is still a hope for it’s not yet a reality! He stressed that our approach to peace needs to be widened and that there is a need for a complete re-set. He recommended that learning about peace is to start from childhood.
The 1992 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, Dr. Rigoberta Menchu Tum, gave a thought provoking speech in which she stated that peace means ‘fullness of life’ which includes healthcare, education, employment, etc., for a Culture of Peace is not an abstract concept; all these needs hav not be in place before it is stated the there is peace. Peace, as we know, doesn’t just mean absence of war, for people are still living in conditions considered ‘peaceless.’ Peace is a value & culture that is absent in human relations. If this is not rectified, the dream of world peace may remain a dream!!
