WoMUN: A Model UN Conference
Charlotte Latin School
Saturday, April 28, 2018 was the initiation of a Model UN conference centered around women’s issues, by the name of “WoMUN.” It was held at Charlotte Latin School with Rhea Shetty’19 and Chiara Evans’19 directing the conference as co-secretaries general.
BK Gayatri Naraine was the keynote speaker for the conference, and she gave the attendees an inner perspective of the UN and the way women’s issues are presented and approached at the UN, recounting intriguing personal experiences.
The main goal of the conference was to provide a platform for youth to discuss problems that women face around the world and to inspire conversations about solutions to these problems plaguing our society. Through these discussions there was the opportunity for youth to educate themselves on these topics while understanding how their own actions could beneficially impact their community and society in general.
The teens were able to raise $600 which was then donated to Lilypad Haven, a local women’s shelter which provides shelter for victims of human trafficking.
