2nd. UN World Meditation Day Main Event at UNHQ

The morning of December 19 opened under dark, heavy clouds, accompanied by strong winds and persistent rain. Nevertheless, more than 700 meditation practitioners gathered early, standing patiently in queues with umbrellas to collect their entry passes to the United Nations, clear security, and proceed to the Trusteeship Council Chamber at UN Headquarters in New York.

The event was co-organized by the Permanent Missions of India, Andorra, Nepal, Mexico, and Sri Lanka to the United Nations. Permanent Representatives from each of these countries addressed the audience, sharing insights on meditation and its significance to their respective cultures and national well-being.

The program featured a thoughtfully curated panel of speakers who presented the profound benefits of meditation from diverse perspectives, including scientific, spiritual, mental, environmental, and holistic health viewpoints.

BK Gayatri Naraine, Main Representative of the Brahma Kumaris at the United Nations, delivered a clear and simple presentation on Raja Yoga Meditation and its practical methodology. She outlined a three-step process: first, moving inward to connect with one’s inner light; second, moving upward to connect with the Source of Light; and third, moving outward to serve the world from a place of light. This message was supported by a large group of Brahma Kumaris practitioners, collectively holding an atmosphere of love, peace, and light.

Other distinguished speakers included Dr. Robert Schneider, Professor of Integrative Medicine and Health and Director of the Institute for Prevention Research at Maharishi International University; Yogmata Keiko Aikawa of the Yogmata Foundation; Dr. Lasantha Chandana Goonetilleke, Professor at Rutgers University; and Dr. John Hagelin, physicist and International President of the Global Union of Scientists for Peace.

The event concluded with closing remarks by Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Founder of the Art of Living Foundation, who led the audience in a profound and uplifting meditation. His session brought the program to a meaningful and powerful close.
