WHAT WE DO

Development

We work in social development (developing the person) and environmental development (understanding the relationship between the person and the natural world).

Development is about supporting people in their endeavors to live better lives. We support positive change by assisting people in their self-determined ventures to work with knowledge, experience and resources. The Brahma Kumaris are in 108 countries where our constituents are often part of the very communities that are in need of change and development. Our large and small centers assist people by developing their spiritual capacity, and creating practical methods to deal with ways to manage their lives in an increasingly global and technical world. Examples of areas we work in are renewable energies, agriculture, decent work, livelihoods, building inner capacity and empowerment.

Field Partners

We are establishing links with various community organizations who are undertaking local, sustainable and values-based initiatives that support the principles of non-violence, peace, ethical work, gender equity and sustainable living.

Humanitarian Affairs

We work in affairs that are critical to the wellbeing of the human person

Humanitarian Affairs protects fundamental freedoms and intrinsic human and spiritual rights. We look at ways in which to integrate human rights on all levels – political social and spiritual. We seek alternative and peaceful ways to manage and mitigate threats and risks to human safety and wellbeing. This can include protection against different forms of violence against the human person through empowerment and education; risks to safety and security by collaborating with local communities and connecting organizations and people with each other; and finding ways to provide the necessities for a good and safe life such as shelter, food, water and sanitation through philanthropic endeavors and voluntary activities. Recently we have started working with local communities in disaster preparedness, response and relief.

Values

We work on integrating values and reiterating their relevance and application to policy discussions and practical implementation.

The values of the Brahma Kumaris are in strong alignment with the United Nations Declaration of Human Rightsand the Preamble to the United Nations Charter. In our work at the UN we offer perspectives that affirm the dignity and worth of the human person, and we cultivate attitudes of tolerance and brotherhood in relation to all topics of concern to the United Nations. We strive to ultimately realize the statements “We the peoples of the United Nations determined… to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small,” while understanding that “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.”
