Rapid changes across the world affect each and every one of the individuals that make up our social world. Without awareness we are susceptible and vulnerable. This susceptibility can either be the seed of positive and constructive change, or of harmful and destructive outcomes.
The Brahma Kumaris aim to mobilize the most constructive and creative energy of the human spirit which when accessed through meditation, spiritual practices, and values-based education can bring the positive and transformative change we all seek in our world society.

Social Development is a broadly inclusive area that touches on every aspect of life, essentially focusing on ensuring a fair distribution of resources and opportunities within a society, promoting economic growth that benefits all, and protecting the environment for future generations, all of which are interconnected and crucial for sustainable development.
On an individual level it refers to the process of learning how to interact with others, build relationships, understand social norms, and develop the skills necessary to function effectively within a community, including the ability to express and manage emotions appropriately; essentially, it is about how a person learns to “be social” and navigate social situations.
Bringing together the broader context of Social Development and the role of the individual within it, is at the heart of our commitment in this area.
In 2015, months before the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals, UN Member States recognized the need for strengthening the social dimension of sustainable development. Throughout 2020, during the 25th year commemoration, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, DESA, focused on four core issues:

Field Initiatives
Divya Nagari
Divya Nagari is a slum transformation project of the Brahma Kumaris’ chapter in India, launched in November 2014. This project serves all generations within the community, giving tools to improve their daily lives.
Children are provided with free daily education, both formal and informal including moral values. Extracurricular activities such as drawing, singing, dancing and crafts are also taught. Educational trips to Science City summer camps, cultural programs and creative workshops are routinely being organized to help these children flourish from within.
Youth are taught spoken English and computer science helping them to find employment.
Elderly women come daily to learn basic skills such as reading and writing local language, expanding their horizons.
Tremendous transformation was observed in the children. Around 80% of the children dropped the habit of tobacco and pan-masala. They have also stopped using abusive language.

Road Safety through Spiritual Life Skills
The vision of a safer world begins with the awareness that since human nature is adaptable, road accidents can be preventable. Every time we step out onto the roads, we carry the power to make choices that prioritize safety over haste, patience over frustration, and harmony over chaos. By holding this vision, we not only elevate our own actions but also inspire those around us to adopt safer practices. A safer world is within reach when we align our behavior with the understanding that every life matters, and knowing the responsibility we hold when we are in charge of a potentially lethal machine.

The road is a vibrant metaphor for life—a place where individual journeys merge into a collective rhythm. Traffic reflects the dynamics of human interaction: cooperation ensures flow, while impatience creates bottlenecks. A stable mind is the ultimate GPS—it helps you navigate calmly through chaos, avoid unnecessary detours, and keeps you from honking at life’s minor inconveniences.
To translate this vision into action, the Brahma Kumaris launched a website under the theme, Road Safety through Spiritual Life Skills. We have organized several initiatives aimed at raising awareness and fostering community involvement. These include creative competitions, human chains, road safety runs, and marches. Bike rallies have brought the message of road safety to the streets, while educational talks, seminars, and national conferences have reached diverse audiences. Notably, the observance of the UN World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims has witnessed participation from Brahma Kumaris centers across five continents, uniting people in a shared commitment to road safety.
Our efforts are supported by a variety of educational tools and creative materials. These include posters, rhymes for children, email campaigns, and graphics for social media. Educational content is tailored for different age groups—children, youth, young adults, and citizens at large. To make the message accessible and impactful, skits, slogans, quiz contests and other engaging formats are used, fostering a culture of safety and mindful awareness on the roads.
